Corp member gets 8-month jail term for Internet scam


 

30-year-old Benneth Ibok, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), currently undertaking his one year compulsory service at Afikpo Local Government Council in Ebonyi State, has been sentenced to eight months imprisonment by a Lagos High Court in Ikeja for attempted internet fraud on Tuesday.
The presiding judge, Justice Olabisi Akinlade convicted Benneth after he pleaded guilty to the offence on arraignment.
The advice of his counsel, Mrs I. Njoku, Benneth entered into a plead bargain agreement with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Sack 50% of civil servants- Mallam Sanusi


 
Central Bank of Nigeria  Governor Mallam Sanusi Lamido on Tuesday lamented the high cost of servicing the nation’s  civil service and called on the Federal Government to fire at least 50 per cent of its entire workforce.
Sanusi, in his presentation at the  Second Annual Capital Market Committee Retreat in Warri, Delta State,  said the country  spends  70 per cent of its earnings on salaries and entitlements of civil servants.

Jonathan sacks BPE boss, Bolanle Onagoruwa


 

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday terminated the appointment of the Director-General of Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE) Mrs. Bolanle Onagoruwa.
The disengagement was contained in a two-paragraph statement by the Senior Special Assistant (Media and Publicity) to the Vice President, Umar Sani.
The statement reads in part, “The Director General of the Bureau for Public Enterprises Ms. Bolanle Onagoruwa, has been relieved of her appointment with immediate effect.
“She is to hand over to the most Senior Director in the Bureau, Mr. Benjamin Ezra Dikki who is to hold the position in an acting capacity.
“Mr. President extends his sincere appreciation to Mrs. Bolanle Onogoruwa for her services to the nation and wishes her the best in her future endeavours.”.............#well i hope to get more info soon.

David Adeleke, more popular with his stage name, 'Davido'', is set to follow his billionaire father’s footsteps, by venturing into more businesses. The singer and producer, is already one of the more popular artistes on the Nigerian music industry, but has stated he is ready to start his clothing line.

Angry woman stabs husband to death for infidelity



A 24-year old nursing mother, Mrs. Edith Okoji, went berserk last weekend and stabbed her husband to death during a domestic fight.
The incident threw the whole residents of Eze Street in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State into confusion and bewilderment as they were seen in groups discussing the matter.
The tragic incident happened as the couple who hail from Ahoda-East local government area of Rivers State got engaged in a serious fight that emanated from infidelity. It was learnt that the accused woman has been arrested and detained by the police.

The family of Mr. Nurudeen Adegoke, were highly elated on Saturday as their 26-year-old son of a plumber graduated with a first class degree in Mathematics and as the overall best graduating student at the 24th convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State, on Saturday.
Adegoke said being a son of a plumber did not deter him from achieving success.

Dr. Joseph E. Murray, who performed the world's first successful kidney transplant and won a Nobel Prize for his pioneering work, has died at age 93.
Murray suffered a stroke at his suburban Boston home on Thanksgiving and died at Brigham and Women's Hospital on Monday, hospital spokesman Tom Lang-ford said.
Since the first kidney transplants on identical twins, hundreds of thousands of transplants on a variety of organs have been performed worldwide. Murray shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1990 with Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, who won for his work in bone marrow transplants.

A Nigerian lady sentenced to 80 years in prison over the death of babies under her supervision


 

24 year old Nigerian/American woman, Jessica Tata, was sentenced to 80 years in prison on Monday November 20th after being found guilty of the death of one of four children killed in a fire at her home day care in Houston.

16-month-old Elias Castillo and three other toddlers died after Tata left them unsupervised at her home while she went to a nearby store. Prosecutors say she left a pan of oil cooking atop a stove-top burner and that this ignited the February 2011 blaze. There were 7 children when the fire started, four died, three survived.

Tata still faces three more counts of felony murder in relation to the other children who died, and three counts of abandoning a child and two counts of reckless injury to a child in relation to three who were hurt. So she will be getting more years added to the 80 as other cases come up.

Tension as robbers attacks three banks at Auchi, Edo state


 

A gang of gunmen this evening invaded the town of Auchi in Edo state, attacking three major banks.
Sources say the banks, namely; Eco Bank, Guaranty Trust and Access bank, may have received huge deposits earlier in the day as they were specifically targeted.Already about 15 people have been feared dead.The robbers it was learnt used large cache of dynamites to blow open the doors and strongrooms of the banks.
The country has literally been under siege since last week when the Nigerian military declared 19 leaders of the Boko-Haram sect wanted.
Monday evening attack which seems like a well-planned robbery operation, saw free use of assorted rifles and various sophisticated weapons by the assailants.
Witnesses say at least 10 persons were killed when the bandits engaged security forces in a gun duel that lasted over an hour. It is still unknown which side recorded casualty, but some residents were reportedly hit by stray bullets.
The police however is yet to make any official statement on the incident.

Newspaper vendor killed for turning down a free reader


 

A newspaper vendor in Calabar, Cross River State, Mr. Innocent Monday-Francis, was on Thursday murdered after an argument that followed his refusal to allow one of his neighbours, identified as Eno, to read the papers.
Monday-Francis (22), who sold newspapers around the popular Flour Mill junction, along the Murtala Mohammed Highway in Calabar, had retired to a neighbourhood bar at Ikot-Effanga area of Calabar to take a bottle of drink when the incident occurred.

Edo deputy governor tells Airhiavbere to apologise or face a lawsuit


 

Edo State Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Odubu, has threatened to sue the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2011 gubernatorial election, Gen. Charles Airhiavbere, for libel.
A statement released by Airhiavbere’s Campaign Organization had stated that a man, “Israel Odaro from Urhomehe” (the town the Deputy Governor hails from), died in the hospital he was rushed to, after he slumped at the state governorship election petition tribunal on Thursday.
The statement alleged that the deputy governor had brought Mr. Israel to the tribunal on what was termed “some dubious mission”.

 Outgoing Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Thursday submitted legislation to change the country's official name to Mexico.

Mother of dead sisters denies being informed

Mrs. Adebisi Coker, mother of Toyin and Bukky, who were killed in the building collapse at Jakande Low Cost Housing Estate, Isolo, Lagos on Wednesday has been discharged from Oja Health Centre where she was taken to for treatment after she was rescued from the debris of the building.She was tracked down on Thursday, but she was not aware that her two children had died.
An elder in the area, Mr. Michael Adegoke, had taken her in until her family members could be notified of the incident. He could not tell Coker about her children.
Some ‘good Samaritans’ had sent Coker some of her documents found in the debris. She was busy rummaging through the documents and searching for her money and ATM card, which she could not locate.

Pregnant woman gets jail time for dumping day old baby in latrine


 

The cry of a baby into a family ought to stir some joy and immeasurable happiness but the reverse was the case when a 25-year-old woman, Ms Toyin Akinbobola, dumped her day-old baby inside a pit toilet at Idanre, Ondo State.
DailyPost learnt nemesis caught up with Toyin, when the cry of the innocent baby attracted a young boy who wanted to use the toilet moments she had carried out the criminal act. Shocked by his discovery, the boy called the attention of other neighbours to help save the baby’s life.
Immediately, some of the residents dashed off and made a formal report to the Olofin Police Station.
On the arrival of the police, the baby which has been covered with excreta and maggots was removed from the stench and rushed to Idanre General Hospital from where she was later referred to the Mother and Child Hospital in Akure for a comprehensive medical treatment.

Fire engulfs PM-news office at ogba

The headquarters of a popular weekly magazine, The-news, and an evening tabloid, PM-News was on Wednesday evening gutted by fire.
The fire, which started at 6.30pm, however, affected the last floor of the two-storey building on Acme Road, Lagos.
It was learnt that the inferno was caused by a power surge.
An employee of the Independent Communications Network Limited, the publishers of TheNews, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said nobody was injured in the incident.
He, however, said the fire destroyed every equipment and property in the affected floor.
He said, “The fire was very ferocious. I think the fire was caused by power surge. When the power supply was restored, the voltage was high and some employees did not switch off their systems.”
